Our organization is able to offer a virtual internship opportunity for up to ten students interested in learning about and applying marketing knowledge in a real-world startup environment, including learning about what it takes to be an entrepreneur, be part of launching a new product, or supporting startups, and learning to use the "growth hacking" mindset on marketing and developing and selling products and services.
For more details about all that "Growth Hacking" entails, please refer to Wikipedia:
Growth Hacking is a relatively new field in marketing focused on growth, coined by Sean Ellis in 2010, after using it to ignite breakout growth for Dropbox, LogMeIn, Eventbrite & Lookout. It started in relation to early-stage startups who need massive growth within a short time on tight budgets, and also reached bigger corporate companies. The goal is to rapidly test ideas that can improve the customer journey, and replicate and scale the ideas that work and modify or abandon the ones that don't before investing a lot of resources. A growth hacking team is made up of marketers, developers, engineers and product managers that specifically focus on building and engaging the user base of a business. Growth hacking is not just a tool for marketers. It can be applied to new product innovation and to the continuous improvement of products as well as to growing an existing customer base. As such, it’s equally useful to everyone from product developers, to engineers, to designers, to salespeople,
Each student will be provided with several products to choose from that are pre-launch, beta, or early-phase. Once the student chooses a product, they will work with the CEO and product developers to work on growth hacking activities related to that product. This can include helping the company find build and launch the first minimum viable product (MVP), and test new ways to increase customer acquisition, to build a better first experience, to create new stream or revenue, to get users to return, and to create brand promoters. In this role, an intern may personally develop or assist in the development of multiple marketing concepts and product iterations to rapidly test persuasive copy, email marketing, SEO, viral strategies, among other tools and techniques, with a goal of increasing conversion rates and achieving rapid growth of the user base.
Other duties the student may complete could include:
Assist with outbound email marketing campaigns as needed; measure and report on performance of these campaigns using tools such as (Google Sheets, Excel, Jira, SurveyMonkey, Active Marketing, and others)Content development and posting, including social posts, blog posts, LinkedIn articles, and website copy.Responding to customer/potential client requests as part of the outreachPerforming focus group or individual interviews or surveys, and/or assisting in the analysis and reporting of data collected from such instruments to inform on future marketing efforts
Student will leave the internship with multiple concrete items that can be included in their portfolio, such as:
- Samples of marketing materials created during the internship
- New skills to add to their resume such as having made different types of content, and new skills with new technology platforms such as Wordpress, Pagemodo, SurveyMonkey, etc.
The individual will receive mentorship and instruction on all tasks to be accomplished via asynchronous and live virtual training from Dr. Edwards, who has 20+ years experience in entrepreneurship and small businesses and has managed marketing, growth, product planning, and sales growth of products in multiple product categories with a focus in technology-oriented startups & small businesses.
