At CAIN, we provide a startup tracking service to our members that uses a database of around 20,000 startups. The primary objective of this project is to expand the database and data visualizations to include provincial funding support of Canadian startups and build benchmarks for the Canadian ecosystem using several of the major US accelerators. Project activities include data collection, updates and integration into Tableau visualizations. The project will be split into two separate groups.
Group 1: Building data sets around major US based accelerators
US accelerators such as Techstars and Y Combinator are considered best in class in the innovation community. Your task involves cleaning our existing data in the CAIN database for these accelerators and adding new data. Furthermore, we would like you to make insightful visuals of startup performance metrics (e.g investment patterns, employment dynamics etc.) using Tableau.
Group 2: Building data sets around Canadian provincial grant support of startups
This will address a gap in the CAIN data: provincial grants. Here lies an opportunity for you to contribute by collecting and structuring provincial grants data. Additionally, you will leverage Tableau to dissect and analyze provincial trends for illuminating the landscape of Canadian startups.
- Gather startup data from accelerator and incubator (BAIs) programs and merge it with the existing CAIN database
- Review and update information on startups already in our database to keep it current.
- Explore provincial government websites to collect grants data (Group 2)
- Design engaging Tableau dashboards for two major US accelerators (Group 1) and each Canadian province (Group 2)
- Analyze dashboards to identify trends and key insights for each accelerator (Group 1) and each province (Group 2)
- Contribute your skills and ideas to the CAIN team to create better visualized deliverables
CAIN’s Data Analyst, Mirai Fukushima (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mirai-fukushima/), will mentor these projects. You will have weekly meetings to be involved in the project's progress, and she will supervise and guide you throughout.
