Groups of students from UofT are keen on getting hands on experience in the Biotech industry. These Genetics stream students are well versed with all the latest tools of gene and genome editing and some double major in Statistics or Neuroscience. There is no strict limit on the group size, it could also be individual students if that works better.

Motivation, fresh ideas, familiarity with the most current advances in the field of genome engineering and potential future employees!

Our students have developed a strong theoretical foundation for working in the field of biotechnology. They are well versed in the latest gene and genome engineering tools, recent advances in living therapeutics, including immunotherapies, RNA-based therapies as well as viral and non-viral vehicles for gene and drug delivery.

Project Examples

Requirements

Students can work individually, or in groups (any size).

Research projects related to drug design, gene editing, immunotherapy or stem cells & regenerative medicine.

Any tools and techniques that they can learn and then carry out independently or within a group. It can include drug screening, transgenics, cell, tissue and organoid cultures. Most beneficial is the exposure to the work environment and the insights gained from working within a biotech startup.

Interns can engage in such roles as:

- Research & development

- Biomedical information gathering

- Market research

- Clinical development

- Regulatory affairs & compliance

- Data analysis

- Data gathering for strategic investments in the healthcare sector

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.

Orient students to your organization, provide safety training and any additional training or orientation required by your organization.

Complete the “Industry Partner and Student Project Charter” with student(s) to ensure project expectations are clear at the beginning of the internship, noting that certain items might reasonably change over the duration of the internship.

Provide supervision and necessary resources/guidance to students partnered with your organization as they complete assigned projects (e.g., answer student questions, provide feedback, troubleshoot challenges, etc.)

Communicate any concerns about students’ performance, conduct, safety, and/or project progression with the designated UofT faculty member contact immediately if an issue arises.

Identify a project/project-based activities for HMB491 students to execute over the duration of their internship.

Engage in our selection process, by reviewing student application packages (i.e., resumes), conducting interviews and identifying preferred candidates.

Complete a mid-term and final evaluation of student performance and development.
