Sustainability is increasingly becoming a strategic issue for businesses in all sectors. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as a strategy and corporate policy, is needed more than ever for companies to thrive and maintain legitimacy and their ability to pursue the firms’ economic goals in the long term.

In this course, students put CSR into a strategic context by explaining resource, industry, and stakeholder perspectives. Integrating strategy and CSR, student are capable of assessing and providing strategic CSR recommendation for your company.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Students' main goals are to explore possible innovation and reinvention of the organization, and/or opportunities to expand into new markets to create sustainable social, environmental and economic value. Students will incorporate your own objectives into their reports.

Deliverables to your company are in two parts. Students will the following reports:

  1. An analysis of the state of your company's current CSR status
  2. Recommendations outlining CSR improvements your company can implement

Both deliverables will include a report for each section submitted at each milestone, as well as a final video presentation (optional bonus assignment for the students) of the recommendations at the final milestone.

Project Examples

Requirements

Students act as consultants hired by your company's management team to incorporate CSR and sustainability into your strategic plan. Depending on your company's CSR performance to date, projects will vary in depth of assessment and recommendations. Concretely, students are capable of the following skills:

  • Assess complex issues and judgments based on established principles and techniques within the strategic management field;
  • Analyze CSR in relation to innovation;
  • Analyze CSR in relation to Bottom of Pyramid (BOP) market development;
  • Analyze CSR in relation to performance management and governance;
  • Apply CSR knowledge in the critical analysis of your firm;
  • Analyze CSR in relation to strategy and implementation;

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Must provide primary data in form of company interviews

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
