This course presents an understanding of accounting information systems and their role in the accounting environment. It will focus on the nature and flows of accounting information in organizations, security, internal controls, the use of information technology in accounting information systems and decision-making. Topics to be covered include the software development life cycle, contemporary technology and applications (including the use of SAP), control concepts and procedures, auditing of information systems, internets, intranets, electronic commerce, and the role of information systems in a business enterprise.

Students are able to:

  • develop & implement an AIS
  • design appropriate internal controls for an AIS
  • use integrated accounting & enterprise software to complete transactions & analyze data
  • create & evaluate data flow diagrams & document flowcharts to describe the flow of information in an AIS
  • conduct a systems study of an AIS
  • create a database & develop reports in Access

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Students will identify important accounting information systems issues, develop an AIS idea into a manuscript, and present the results during one of the last days of class. They'll also provide a written report.

Requirements

Students will develop a list of risks associated with a business process and create a plan to mitigate those risks by recommending appropriate internal controls.

Possible project topics include:
