Students at the College of the North Atlantic are excited to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they've acquired during their program throughout their Field placement opportunity. Our students understand what it takes to run an efficient office within a medical practice, clinic or other health care setting and are eager to assist where and when needed.

Field placement is for credit towards completion of their program.

Deliverables will vary depending on the scope of the project. The student must complete 6 weeks at a minimum of 30 hours per week with your organization.

Requirements

Students at the College of the North Atlantic can successfully complete projects for a range of areas. Students are armed with knowledge and are able to assist with projects related to, but not limited to:

  • Scheduling, task coordination, and organizational skills to facilitate the completion of tasks and to meet deadlines in the medical environment.
  • Establishing and maintaining data management systems to organize electronic and paper records for the medical environment.
  • Organizing, processing, and responding to electronic and paper communications to facilitate the flow of information in the medical environment.
  • Producing accurate financial and billing records for the medical environment within a specified time frame by compiling information and using the appropriate software.
  • Producing accurate medical correspondence and reports by a specific deadline using available computer technology as well as by applying recording, editing, and language skills. Students have knowledge of Medical Transcription, Medical Terminology and have transcribed reports in various specialty areas.
  • By leveraging their professional interpersonal skills they can effectively assist in the completion of individual and team tasks, to ensure effective client service, and to promote the image of the organization.
  • Troubleshooting and showing initiative in the creation and production of accurate organized medical documents within a specified time frame.
  • Providing technical support and training related to computer software to others in the medical environment as required.
  • Use the Internet and its tools in a medical environment to enhance communication and business opportunities.
  • Demonstrate administrative skills to enhance the effective operation of the workplace.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Weekly 1 hour meetings between the student and site supervisor (can be done by phone or video conferencing).

Sign weekly hour log to verify student’s completed hours.

Complete an end of term evaluation of student performance.

Provide a dedicated contact who will act as the student's primary supervisor over the duration of the virtual placement/project. A secondary contact should be provided as a backup. Students will interact virtually with their primary contact on a daily basis, or as needed and agreed upon.

Be available for a short phone call with the coordinator to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the internship.
